  • As part of the registration process, please review your personal information and update your contact information.  There are many members with invalid date of birth and missing emergency contact information.  We would appreciate if these items are updated/corrected.
  • You can monitor the status of your registration through "My Sign-Up Info" which appears in the Member's Home drop-down panel above.

Key principles to keep in mind:

  • This season, ALL LEAGUES WILL BE FILLED ON A FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED BASIS!
  • Registrations are not complete until fully paid.
  • As of September 1st, 2022 the “Early Registration Discount” of $30 for returning members will not be applicable.

Green/Practice Ice: Will be available to book using the "Reserve Ice Time" function on the Member's Home page.  Up to 4 individuals may sign up on the same sheet.  Please hover over the available timeslots to see if anyone has already signed up for a specific sheet.

**New** Doubles and Triples:   Last season we ran events through the year and have decided to make this timeslot a league for the 2022-23 season.  Curlers interested in learning Doubles and Triples games will learn rules, strategy, and play games throughout the year Fridays 12:30-2:00pm.

Daytime TAG Leagues:    This season, each league will be charged separately, the "two timeslots for one price" is no longer in effect.  Half season is from October to December or January to April.  Placement into a fall time-slot will be wait-listed until September 1.  Placement into a winter time-slot is dependent upon availability.

5-person Team Entry: To facilitate busy schedules, many teams are turning to a 5-person team structure.  In these instances, YCC will only collect league fees from 4 members. Once 5 members are registered and paid, a refund equivalent to the league fee will be provided to the skip to be distributed amongst the team.

Rowan’s Law – Concussion Safety: This Act, passed by the Ontario Government imposes various requirements on sports organizations in connection with concussion protocol and amateur sports. Members are responsible for understanding and agreeing to the protocols detailed under this act.  Specifics, as it pertains to YCC are provided on the 2022-2023 Membership signup (Step 5 – Agree to Club Liability Releases) page which we encourage you to read and agree to as part of your registration process.  This step is required by those under 26 years of age and highly encouraged for all ages.

Sparing:  Add your name to the “My Subbing Availability” in the Member's Home drop-down panel on the "Member's Home" page.

Volunteering:  Have a look at the “My Volunteer Availability” in the Member's Home drop-down panel.  Most of the club activities that go into making YCC a success are the result of volunteers from the membership.  Your support is always greatly appreciated.

New Members Always Welcome: The success of YCC is dependent on the addition of new members. The best way to recruit is through the existing membership and to this end we ask all members to encourage friends and family to try the sport and join YCC.

To help encourage the enrollment of new members, YCC is holding a number of Introduction to Curling Events at the beginning of the season.  The intention of this program is to encourage participants to come out and try and enjoy the sport in time to the join club for the second half of the season. Please do your part and spread the word!

York Curling Club to Receive Support through the Community Building Fund

NEWS

November 5, 2021

NEWMARKET ― The Ontario government is providing the York Curling Club with a $50,000 grant to help recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and deliver programs and services in Newmarket and across York Region. This grant is being provided through the Community Building Fund’s operating stream, which will support 648 non-profit tourism, culture, sport and recreation organizations with more than $46 million in funding.

“COVID-19 has been a challenge for so many not-for-profit tourism, culture, sport and recreation organizations, and I am proud that our government is supporting their recovery though the Community Building Fund,” said Christine Elliott, MPP for Newmarket-Aurora. “Organizations like the York Curling Club are the bedrock of our community. By helping them during the pandemic, we are ensuring that people in Newmarket and across York Region will have the opportunity to reconnect with the many things that make our community special.”

The Community Building Fund launched earlier this year as a part of the 2020 Budget, Ontario’s Action Plan: Protect, Support, Recover and is administered by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) through two streams: Operating and Capital. The Operating stream closed on June 1, 2021, and is providing organizations across the province with funding to support:

  • Essential expenditures, such as staff salaries and fixed operational costs, including utilities, rent, lease, telephone and communication lines/services.
  • Equipment costs, programs, services, and adapting to public health measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as equipment for changing technology, health and safety, and personal protective equipment.
  • Innovation, digital and mobile web/virtual costs for the delivery of products and experiences.

“We are very grateful for the financial support that the Ontario government and Ontario Trillium Foundation has provided to York Curling Club. These grants have enabled improvements that make the club safer for our curlers to return to play with confidence. The changes have also allowed for years of improved accessibility for members of all abilities in addition to the touch-free safety features that were in mind for the pandemic climate,” said Kayla Moreau, President of the York Curling Club. “Last year was difficult as we had to close the club for the full season which was a definite hit to our operating budget, but with these improvements and financial support we look forward to returning to a full pre-pandemic membership, curling bonspiels, school visits, and other learn to curl programs as soon as possible!”

Hello Junior Curlers (and family members),

On September 28, 2021 York region Public Health issued a "Letter of Instruction for Sports Facilities" which details a change order to all Sport Facilities vaccination policies within York Region. This order states that as of October 1, 2021 we must "Require each person, age 12 years and older, at the point of entry, who attends the indoor area of the Facility for the purpose of (a) actively participating in organized sports, (b) coaching, officiating at organized sports or volunteering, or (c) spectating at organized sports, to provide identification and proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or a valid medical exemption."

The vaccination policy that York Curling Club had in place allowed for a buffer period for members to get fully vaccinated by November 15. Unfortunately, we must comply with this order being placed on us by York Region Public Health and there will be no exceptions unless a member is under 12 years of age or they are medically exempt and can provide a valid doctor's note stating that they are medically exempt.

What this means for you is that anyone arriving to participate on Sunday October 3, 2021 for their first games (volunteers and coaches included) will need to provide proof of their second dose of vaccination to be able to play. If this is an issue for any members please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so we can work through a plan.

Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to a great season ahead.

For all new curlers, there is a Beginner's Clinic on Sunday, September 26, from 7PM to 10PM.  You can register for the free clinic from the Calendar/Events menu item Event Listing.

For all members, Green/Practice Ice, will be done by a booking process this year.  This is to manage the number of people in the building as we are currently under capacity limitations.  All available practice slots are on the Event Listing page.  Please book your slots and be respectful to others and the ice crew by staying within your time slot.

For those interested in doing some on-ice instruction, York Curling Club is hosting a 2-day Club Coach Course, conducted by the Ontario Curling Council, on September 25 and 26th.  The course cost of $210 plus HST, will be reimbursed by the club to members who provide a minimum of 10 hours of on-ice instruction during the current season and commit to providing 2 hours of on-ice instruction per season going forward.  This course will not only provide you with the tools to provide instruction to others, it will improve your game as well.   You can register for this course from this link to the Ontario Curling Council web site.

Since we are still dealing with the potential spread of COVID-19 even amongst the vaccinated, we want to review some of the main protocols we have in place to keep us safe as possible.  If you have any questions not covered by the following, please send them to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

    1. while seated at a designated table to consume food or drink
    2. to participate in athletic activities - curling is considered an athletic activity and the mask can be removed once you have reached your sheet of ice for your game.  Physical distancing must be maintained while on the ice.
  5. The plan is to have the bar operational. Initially the product selection may not be as it has in the past, but that will change as we progress.  Please let us know if there is anything specific you would like to have available at the bar.  Send requests to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. We will be accomodatng as possible.

  7. Shared food snacks that were traditional in some leagues will also be suspended until further notice.
  8. Physical distancing must be maintained while in the club house as much as possible.  In compliance with previously mentioned O. Reg. 364/20,tables will be positioned so patrons at adjacent tables will be 2 m apart and 8 patrons can be seated at a table.
  9. Club stabilizers and delivery sticks will be provided.  Please ensure you sanitize after you use them.  Rocks, stabilizers and delivery sticks will be sprayed with a sanitizer between draws.
  10. For the most part, the Curling Canada Return-To-Play Guidelines for game play will be followed, See "PLAYING THE GAME" and "COVID-19 GUIDELINES REMAIN IN PLACE", page 23 and 24 of the document.  The following are the highlights:

On September 1, 2021 the Ontario Provincial Government released a mandate stating that certain Ontario businesses will be required to request proof of vaccination for people entering their facilities as of September 22, 2021.

What has changed?

The full mandate can be found here but the parts that pertain to York Curling Club are as follows:

"Ontarians will need to be fully vaccinated (two doses plus 14 days) and provide their proof of vaccination along with photo ID to access certain public settings and facilities. This approach focuses on higher-risk indoor public settings where face coverings cannot always be worn and includes:

  • Restaurants and bars (excluding outdoor patios, as well as delivery and takeout)
  • Facilities used for sports and fitness activities and personal fitness training, such as gyms, fitness and recreational facilities with the exception of youth recreational sport

Individuals who cannot receive the vaccine due to medical exemptions will be permitted entry with a doctor’s note until recognized medical exemptions can be integrated as part of a digital vaccine certificate. Children who are 11 years of age and younger and unable to be vaccinated will also be exempted from these requirements."

It is expected that by the end of October there will be an app that has been developed for businesses and Ontario residents alike that allows a business to scan a QR code to determine vaccination status, but unfortunately it will be too late for the start of the curling season.

We understand that this requirement may upset some members but we must comply if we want to open our doors this fall.

What is the plan?

The current plan is that we will have people set up at the front doors of the club during Green Ice Week and the first week of curling with a list of all registered members. In order to enter the facility after September 22, 2021 you will be required to show your vaccination receipts as well as photo identification. We will only ask to see this the first time you enter the club and record that we have seen proof of your vaccination status (unless otherwise instructed by the government). We ask that you are prepared with the vaccination receipts and ID when you enter the building to aid in keeping the process as quick and easy as possible. Please note that you will not be permitted entrance to YCC after September 22, 2021 without proof of a complete vaccination series approved by Health Canada or World Health Organization + 14 days.(e.g., two doses of a two-dose vaccine series, or one dose of a single-dose vaccine series).

How do I access my vaccination receipts?

There is a fairly simple way to access your official vaccination receipts (we will require the official receipts) online. We ask that you try to access these receipts sooner rather than later as there have been some instances where they are not available and you will have to contact your local public health unit or the vaccine portal to gain access to these documents.

To access your vaccine receipts please visit : https://covid19.ontariohealth.ca/

Full instructions on how to navigate the website to access your vaccine receipts can be found here. Please note that if you have a red and white health card or do not have a health card at all you will be required to call the Provincial Vaccine Booking hotline at 1-833-943-3900. The call centre agent can email you a copy of your receipt.

If you have issues with accessing your vaccination receipts the website will prompt you to contact your local Public Health Unit and be provided with a phone number. The earlier you deal with this, the more likely there will be a quick turn around with being able to fix the issue. The closer to the date of issuance, there will be higher demand on the units to fix any errors!

OLD REFUND POLICY - UPDATED Effective May 3, 2021.

York Curling Club

As a non-profit facility, the York Curling Club (YCC) relies on membership fees as its primary source of revenue to fund its operations year over year. Annual operating budgets are established based on projected registrations. Many of the club activities that go into making YCC a successful entity are the result of volunteers who oversee the business operations of the club.

Policy Statement

Upon receipt and processing of an applicant's registration and placement on the membership registration list, it is the position of the York Curling Club that there are no refunds of membership fees.

Exceptional Circumstances

Certain circumstances may dictate that the Policy Statement may be reconsidered.

What exceptional circumstances may be considered for refund?

  1. Youth (Junior / Little Rock) curlers trying curling for the first time and decide they do not enjoy it may receive a full refund prior to the 3rd week. No administrative fee will be incurred.

  2. Any member that sustains an injury or illness prior to January 1 of the current curling season and is incapacitated for the balance of the season may receive a refund of 50% of their membership. No refunds will be considered for any injury occurring on or after January 1. No administration fee will be incurred.

  3. Any registered member who decides to withdraw their registration prior to the September registration date may receive a full refund. A $50 administration fee will be incurred.

How do I request a refund?

Requests must be submitted in writing to the Board of Directors (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) outlining the request.

Effective Date: June 1, 2015

Since this program was started in early December, $3,874 has been donated by 25 of our members and families.

These funds will be used to offset Covid related equipment and supplies; as well as utility, tax and insurance costs which still need to be covered despite the club's closure.

Through the Ontario Curling Council and the National Sport Trust Fund, we have established a charitable donation program where you can contribute to the York Curling Club - Covid-19 Support Fund.

You will be provided with a tax receipt for this year if you donate before Dec 31 and the club receives about 94% of your contribution. You can access the form to contribute to this fund from this link or from the new Fundraising Menu Item on the YCC Home Page.

We also have some amazing sponsor's to thank for making contributions to the club this season despite the lack of their usual exposure. A HUGE thank you to:

Stay Safe

To All York Curling Club Members,

We reach out to you today to convey the news that based on the current reality of the prevalence of COVID-19 in the Province, the decision has been made by the Board of Directors that York Curling Club will be closing for the remainder of what would have been our 2020-21 curling season. This decision is disappointing but ultimately became unavoidable.

The decision to close comes from the current state of affairs in York Region, where we find in the RED Control Zone due to the growing rate of COVID-19 within our community. We worked through the end of the summer and into fall, following both public health and the curling governing bodies’ advice, in implementing measures that were compliant with everything required to put us in a position to be able to open. Unfortunately, while navigating rigorous preparation during a pandemic, once the rate of community transmission began to rise, it was no surprise that York Region Public Health and Province began to impose many restrictions for our safety.

Throughout the past ten months, we have worked diligently as a Board, first in taking the prudent and necessary step to close our doors back in March, and then continue following both governmental and public health orders and advice as we worked to prepare to potentially be able to open our doors safely in this new world. Ultimately, regardless of preparation, we find ourselves here today with the announcement that there will not be curling at York this season.

We had hoped to plan a February start, however, the level of interest based on the survey results was low and with the continued growth in COVID cases and the anticipated spike following the holiday break, the Board has decided to keep the club closed for the 2020-21 season and plan for the 2021-22 season.

Refunds have been issued for all those that had registerd for the November 1 start-up.  Some cheques have yet to be cashed.  If you have not received your refund, please follow-up with Jack at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

We have been receiving queries from members, whether they could make a financial contribution to offset ongoing costs during the shutdown period.  Through the Ontario Curling Council and the National Sport Trust Fund, we have established a charitable donation program where you can contribute to the York Curling Club - Covid-19 Support Fund.  You will be provided with a tax receipt and the club receives about 94% of your contribution. You can access the form to contribute to this fund from this link - York Curling Club - Covid-19 Support Fund.  On the YCC website you will see a new Fundraising menu item, from which you could link to the donation web page.   Thank you in advance to all those who contribute to the ongoing operation of the club.

Please stay tuned to your email inbox for further information and updates as we move forward, and do not hesitate to reach out to Jack or any member of the Board with any questions you may have. We hope you are all doing well and staying safe.

Wayne Brakeboer, President

and The Board of York Curling Club

2020-21 Curling Season Survey Results

Ontario has entered Stage 3 of the Re-Opening Ontario Plan which allows us to open the club and bar with certain restrictions in place which at this time will have an impact on our league and draw structure.

There will be more information coming soon as we work through some of the options for opening.

To All Members of York Curling Club:

On behalf of the Board and management of YCC I hope everyone is safe and healthy. It was only a month ago we were looking towards the Night Of Champions and our ever popular Closing Roaring 20's Bonspiel.  So much has happened in this past month. I thought I would assure you that the financial health of YCC is sound. We made the decision to pay all our staff to the end of the season as if we were still open. We are looking into government programs that are available to help us defray our expenses. We are planning for a great start to the season in September when we can all celebrate the joy of curling with our friends and family.

I did want to reach to all our members at this time to see if there is anything we can do together to provide assistance.  This past week we saw long lineups at grocery stores. For some, every trip to a public space can be fraught with anxiety.  We know that this virus can be fatal to people with a compromised immune system, people with respiratory problems and older adults.  We have seen that even healthy people have died from this virus which means all of us are at risk. There is a strong community spirit at York Curling Club.  So if you know anyone or you yourself need help, please reach out so we can help provide any support you need.  Even if it just going to the store to pick up some essentials on your behalf, there are members who are ready to help.

I know that I made the mistake of thinking this will be over quickly. I think that now it is apparent that this will last for a few more months. While some of us have family nearby to help, many do not or do not want to impose on them.  Many of us have a lot more time on our hands and looking for an opportunity to help a friend. So if you need help or know somebody who does, please email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and I will arrange to match you with the volunteer who is able to help. Together, we will all come through this safe and sound. If you are interested in volunteering, you can sign-up as a Volunteer online under "My Volunteer Availability" for the "Members Helping Members During COVID-19" or you can e-mail me as well.

Thank you and stay safe.

President, York Curling Club

Attention all members!

This year we are trying something new for Green Ice!  (The ice is still white, don't worry!)

For those of you who aren't sure just what Green Ice is...It's newly installed ice, and it's a "break-in" period for the rocks, ice and rusty curlers!  It's a chance for you to come out and stretch those summer muscles and get ready for a new curling season!

This year as Thanksgiving falls quite late, we are going to have 2 full weeks of green ice.  The first week is entirely open for all members:

                                              Monday, September 30     6:30pm-10:00pm

                                              Tuesday, October 1           1:00pm-5:00pm AND 6:30pm-10:00pm

                                             Wednesday, October 2      6:30pm-10:00pm

                                             Thursday, October 3          1:00pm-5:00pm AND 6:30pm-10:00pm

Starting on Friday, October 4, Green ice will change to "League specific" green ice.  This means that you can come throw rocks, meet your team, and brush up on your skills during the timeslots of your registered leagues.  League Specific green ice will continue through to Thursday, October 10, so that every league has a chance to get on the ice.

Friday, October 11 - Monday, October 14 the club will be closed for Thanksgiving, and League Games will commence on Tuesday, October 15.

In addition to our roof replacement, we are working on refreshing our changerooms, washrooms and entrance halls.  The light is starting to shine at the end of the tunnel, and it's looking pretty snazzy!

Friday, April 5, 2019

It was an exciting evening of curling, eating and socializing at Night of Champions!

Spectators were treated with some fantastic shot-making, as competitors showcased the reason they were honoured to be a part of this fantastic event!

Thanks to Robin Kelly and her family business, King Cole Duck for generously donating the fabulous smoked duck the players and spectators enjoyed throughout the evening.

Photos from this event are now posted on the website, click here to check out all of the excitement!  Thanks to Rhonda McNeill for the photos!

winning streak through semis and finals.

This new competition was held March 28-31 in the Collingwood area,

with Stayner, Meaford, Collingwood and Thornbury clubs all taking part.

York Curling Club is so proud of this accomplishment!

An honourable mention also goes out to

JoAnn Inouye, Karen Morrison, Karen Smith, Erika Buhlman and Aileen Filman

York Curling Club is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a

$150,000

grant from the

Ontario Trillium Foundation.

These funds are dedicated to the replacement of our roof over sheets 1-4 and the lounge.

The grant will cover most of the cost to replace the roof.

The new roof will allow us to remove all of the tarps hanging in the ice shed

and ensure years of leak-free curling!

The work will commence in May and is expected to take approximately 3 weeks.

Thank-you to Phil Woodard who took the lead in preparing the grant application

and seeing it through to its successful completion.

A little piece of YCC history...

Everyone has noticed the beautiful painting of "Curling on Fairy Lake", 1963, hung proudly at York Curling Club.

What you might not know is that each person depicted in that scene was a founding member of YCC!

Recently we had the pleasure of one of the founding members visit the club, and she proudly pointed herself out in the picture.

Mae Glass can be found in the lower right corner.

She is 102 years old and her 13-year old great-granddaughter, Jocelyn Sharko is currently a junior curler at YCC.

She passed on a little known fact, that the artist also painted herself in the picture.

Katherine Ross Robinson is the only one looking directly out at you when you look at the painting!

Strathcona Cup

January 10 to February 3, 2018

can  Canadian men curlers tour Scotland  scot

York Curling Club's very own John Morrison took part in this historic event this past month.  The following is a recount of his experience...

The Strathcona Cup is an event that dates back to 1903, started by a Scot Donald Smith. Among other impressive accomplishments in Canada including MP, Smith drove in the last spike of the trans Canada railway, and later was named Lord Strathcona back in Scotland. This event has been held every 5 years since, with a Scot team touring Canada, and Canada reciprocating in the intervening 5 years.

I’ve had an absolutely amazing time over the past 24 days. I feel very fortunate to being selected as part of a team of 40 curlers representing every province across Canada. We split into 2 20-player teams after day 2 - I was part of the 5-team north contingent. We played 26 draws at 10 different locations: Hamilton, Perth, Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee, Forfar, Fife, Kinross, Stirling, and Edinburgh. The North team played against most of the former Scottish and world champions, as well as Bruce Mouet (the surprise winning skip at the grand slam event in December), the current mixed doubles champion, the current Scottish junior champions, current and former super league champions, and most of the 30 provincial champion teams.

I’m not sure of the strength of the south tour opponents, but we were slightly behind the south in total points, finishing with a combined winning total differential of over 300 points. I was fortunate enough to be chosen as a skip. I seemed to be making a higher percentage of my shots than back home, but was helped by 3 excellent teammates, from Montreal, the Soo, and Calgary. I unfortunately picked up a bug and had to lay low for some of the time with the help of antibiotics, but persevered and only missed out on 3 games. Among other sites, we visited 3 or 4 distilleries along with 3 of Scotland’s most famous golf courses: Royal Dornoch (ranked by Tom Watson as his favourite course in the world), Carnoustie, and St. Andrews.

The Scots are amazing, warm and welcoming people. We were treated like royalty throughout. We were met at every location with an archway of curling brooms held up by our opponents. We were piped onto the ice prior to every game. We had regular 4th end breaks where we stacked our brooms over the button, then settled in for a wee dram of the local whiskey. I was flag bearer at our final game, quite an emotional experience. At the formal dinner (of which there were many) following our final game, I gave the thank you speech to the Scots.

If you’re interested in more info and/or pictures, log into strathconacup100.ca. After 26 days away, I must admit I look forward to being home and getting that first big hug from Karen.

Hit, Draw and Tap or "HDT"

as it has come to be known, is a youth skills competition where kids age 6-13 compete as individuals.  HDT groups kid into three different age categories, to perform three different shots: a "Hit", a "Draw", and a "Tap".  The difficulty of the skills are modified based on the age of the child.

Participants competed here at York in November, and repeated each skill five times for a total score that was compared against others in the province on a "Provincial Leaderboard".  The top 10 curlers in each age group + ties qualified for the Hit, Draw and Tap Provincial Championship which was held in Huntsville on Saturday, February 3, 2018 as part of the 2018 Recharge with Milk Men's Tankard.

We are pleased to announce that Cameron Pipher of York Curling Club achieved 4th overall in the finals in Huntsville, from a group of 152 participants in his age category (6-8 year olds).  Way to go Cameron!

In the 9-10 year old category, Spencer Savage, also of York Curling Club tied for 3rd place overall in Huntsville!

Way to represent York Curling Club boys!  We are very proud of you!

Congratulations to Team Johnson!

The Men's TCA competition is a huge event, spanning an entire week, with 4 divisions, and 216 teams!  York entered 4 men's teams this year.

Huge congrats to Bryan Johnson (skip), Dan Cleutinx (vice), Patrick Greenman (second) and Bob Hevey (lead) winning the 2nd event in the Open Division (which consisted of 88 teams!)

Representing York in the Grand Master's Division (32 teams) was the team of Jim Hindorf (skip), Steve Sinclair (vice), Bill Morris (second) and Art Darnborough (lead); and the team of Mike Shields (skip), Silvio Vian (vice), Rick Charles (second), and Sid Smith (lead).

In the Senior's Division York 's represented team of Peter Ellis (skip), Andy Tonkin (vice), David Greenwood (second), and Russ Cole (lead) competed with 64 teams total.

It is amazing that we have such good representation at events like this from York. Consider entering out of club events either with the TCA, OCA or club bonspiels.  It's wonderful to meet new people and show them all what fantastic curlers we have here at York!

Provided below is a link to information on the participant headcounts for YCC events. These counts appear under the column labelled "Registered", and they include applications that are either in Confirmed status or in Pending status. Applications that are in Waiting status are not included in the headcounts, nor are applications in Cancelled status.

Event managers are asked to simply view the headcount information -- they are asked not to start playing with the event definitions or edit anything on the page which provides this headcount information. Suffice it to say, that playing with this can very easily cause things to get messed up -- so look, but don't touch!!
