logo ocaDue to the drop in the number of participating teams at the various OCA Competitions, the format and eligibility rules for OCA Competitions are undergoing significant changes for the the 2016-2017 curling season.

It is hoped that these changes will improve the ice utilization at clubs that host these competitions and over time, will increase the participation level of some of these competitions.

The links in the message (click to view) from the OCA, will take you to information about the various events and conference calls, scheduled from May 15 to 19, that are set up to gather more feedback about the changes.

If you have participated in or plan to participate in OCA competitions, please review this information and join the appropriate conference call if you have any concerns or questions.

The World Curling Federation is holding a Sweeping Summit (info) which will address the challenges faced throughout the 2015/16 season with brush head technology and sweeping technique. They have asked curlers to complete a short survey to provide their input.

The Sweeping Summit survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/3PP266G and should be completed by Monday 16 May 2016 so that responses can be collated and shared with those attending the summit.

Team photos and action shots are posted - you can download from the photo site.

This year’s Closing Bonspiel, Chaired by our own Sheriff Maureen Campbell and her AMAZING band of Volunteer Deputies, opened and closed out with a bang! Duels were held throughout the week, as teams challenged one another through a series of 3-4 games. At the stroke of 6:50 pm, Tuesday night, thirty-six teams began their ride onto the ice at YCC, where over successive nights, they dueled it on the slippery landscape and later in the lounge with “games a plenty!”. The draws were fast, and the shots were heard far and wide! But fate has a role to play, and in the end, with thirty-three teams put to the side, three teams stood tall; the A, B and C winners!

2016 closing champsLeading the way by winning the “A Event” was our very own Draw Master, John Morrison, and his supporting cast of champions Pam Holik, Lynne Jamieson and Melissa Kauffeldt.

In second place was “Lefty Lemon”, as Lloyd Lemon and his cast of shot makers Karen Cole, John Hall and Judy Walker captured the “B Event”.

And finally, bringing up the rear, and showing he’s still got it was none of other than “Mr. I can’t get enough curling”, Harry Carter and his cast shots and guards led by Greg Klein, Jill Renshaw and Karen Gowdy, as they captured the “C Event”.

A hearty York Curling Club congratulations to all the WINNERS, and to all who participated. This year’s Wild West was truly a classic, and one that we will remember for year to come.

See y’all next year!!

Yea ha, when the shooters were on the ice, local showdowns were held in the lounge, as Deputies Peter and Wendy drew down the names, one pull at a time. With “hefty” rewards on the line, each draw of the ticket was done “slooowwwllly!”  In the end, with Tim’s cards and booze cards daggled in front of them, three amigos held tight for the BIG reward payouts. In the end “quick draw, Andrew Fuller” took the top prize of $150, followed closely by Gary “I almost won” Miller who took second prize of $100 and finally “Lefty Lloyd Lemon” once again, as he sandbagged the $50 third place prize.

A BIG ‘ole thank you to all who participated, and to our Deputies Peter and Wendy!

Congratulations to the following team who defended their Tuesday Night Men's Team Entry spots:

  • Mark Simpson, Randy Galpin, Scott Howson and Simon Langford
  • Art Otsu, Don Kingzinger, Dennis Mansillo and Frank Kendle

Congratulations to the two new teams that qualified for Friday Open League:

  • Kitty Mitchell, Leslie Armstrong, Joanna Todd and Karen Atkinson
  • Sandy Booth, Jo Miller, Joanne Kelly and Karen Hoare

Check out photos from the Night of Champions

YCC 2016 NOCAs usual Night of Champions at York was a busy and successful evening! The lounge was full of spectators and the games were great. Trophies were presented to the winners. There was another, special presentation that evening as well. A banner was presented on behalf of the Toronto Curling Association to John Morrison, Karen Morrison, Peter Ellis and Paulette Ellis for their win at the TCA Senior Mixed Competition this past season.

We would also like to congratulate and wish luck to our Travelers representatives this coming fall. York will be represented by Bryan Johnston, Dan Cleutinx, Sean Spencer and Bob Hevey in the men’s competition and by Laurie Shields, Lisa Rolfe, Samantha Fuller and Trina Sweezie in the women’s competition!

tim shields 8ender

Team Tim Shields scored an 8 Ender during their Thursday night Men's game on October 22nd.

The team consists of Tim Shields (skip), Gary Miller (Vice), Chris Stafleu (2nd), and Mike Jones (Lead and a first year curler).

Congratulations guys!

help wantedAs many of you know, York hosts a great school program on Thursday mornings. We have been giving local students the chance to try curling in conjunction with their physical education programs at school.

In order to host these groups we need volunteers to help with basic instruction. Our goal is to have one volunteer at each end of the ice. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE AN EXPERT!! We just cover the basics and get the kids into a game so they can see what fun our sport is and perhaps decide to take up the game.

If you are available Thursday mornings between 9:00 and 11:00 am and would like to help out please contact JoAnn Inouye by email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or phone 905-868-6774 or find her at the Club when you are in curling.

Your help would be greatly appreciated and would allow York to continue a unique program we have offered for more than twenty years!

YCC is inviting 6 candidates to attend a Club Coach Course set up by the OCA this Fall. It is a two day event that is usually offered at a Club in the GTA Region (this info is not available yet but will be soon).

The successful candidates will be reimbursed their fee of $175.00 for attending the course when they have completed their volunteer hours with our Learn to Curl Program. This is a great way for a curler to improve their skills and give back to the Club at the same time.

Several of our members have attended these courses and are now certified as Club Coaches and have had a significant impact assisting new curlers and helping with the Learn to Curl Program.

With the sidewalk along the south wall of the building and parking there as well, could you please not block the walk with the backs of your trucks when you park. It makes it difficult for other members to use the walkway. If you would park your vehicles a little farther out in the spot or in another area (when possible) it would be appreciated!
Thank you

Here are a few tips on the YCC registration process:

  1. Returning YCC members from the 2013/2014 season, Learn To Curl league participants and some individuals who have asked to join for the next season have an account in the system and were sent an email with their user name and password in late June. If you're having difficulty finding this email look for an email from "yorkcurlingclub @ gmail.com".

Ontario Curling AssociationOnce again this year, the OCA is offering their High Performance Camp. Download this flyer for more details. Any questions/concerns please contact Jim Waite directly at 519-631-4440 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Signup for York Curling Club's 2016 Heritage Bonspiel - Saturday, October 29th. This is a mixed in-club event with team and individual entry.  We will help make up the teams.
